Brilliant Bugs Schedule – September 19th

10:00 AM: Check In

10:15 AM: Introductions. Go around room, have everyone introduce themselves, let them tell what their favorite animal is. Introduce topic for the day: invertebrates! Go over what an invertebrate is

10:30 AM: Zoo Walk. Encourage kids to keep their eye out for native invertebrates we might see along the way.

11:00 AM: Invertebrate specimen investigation using magnifying glasses. Talk about anatomy of invertebrates.

11:30 AM: Meet an invertebrate: striped bark scorpion

11:45 AM: Game Time

12:00 PM: Lunch

12:30 PM: Butterfly life cycle craft

1:00 PM: Meet an invertebrate: Texas brown tarantula

1:15 PM: Create an invertebrate habitat to take home

1:45 PM: Craft: Egg Carton ants (or other invert). Talk about insect/arachnid anatomy.

2:15 PM: Meet an invertebrate: Madagascar hissing cockroach and millipedes

2:30 PM: Madagascar hissing cockroach food preference lab. Talk about importance of hissing cockroaches as decomposers/detritivores

3:00 PM: Create clay hides for education invertebrates

Radical Reptiles Schedule – September 26th

Go over what classifies an animal as a reptile. Go over types of reptiles: squamates (snakes and lizards), crocodilians, turtles/tortoises, tuatara

11:30 AM: Meet a reptile: leopard gecko and blue-tongued skink

12:00 PM: Lunch

2:00 PM: Craft: Beaded lizard keychain

11:00 AM: Make bird feeders to take home

11:30 AM: Bird beak activity

12:30 PM: Owl pellet dissection

1:00 PM: Meet a bird: Padre

1:30 PM: Bird burritos

2:00 PM: Train! Leave at 1:50 PM. Talk about ratites while waiting. Point out emus, ostriches, and rhea.

2:30 PM: Bird biofacts: eggs and feathers. Talk about the functions of different feathers

3:00 PM: Meet a bird: George. Allow him time to investigate his enrichment.
