Gift Shop Associate

Austin Zoo is seeking to hire an outgoing, energetic, hard working individual to work in our Gift Shop as a cashier. A part-time or full time position is available.

Position Requirements (requires at least one year of experience):

  • Provide world class guest relations in a busy, vibrant environment.
  • Operating credit card terminal
  • Handling cash
  • Providing visitors with information and assistance
  • Greeting all visitors upon entering the zoo
  • Assisting visitors with rentals as needed
  • Cleaning rented items when returned by visitors
  • Must be available to work weekdays, weekends, some holidays, and the week of Spring Break

Individuals must meet the following requirements:

  • 18 years of age or older
  • Able to lift 50 pounds
  • Possess a valid Texas driver’s license

Full Time Facilities Assistant/Groundskeeper

Austin Zoo is currently hiring for a full-time Facilities Assistant and Groundskeeper. This position covers a wide variety of tasks and will occasionally include working weekends, holidays and evening hours.
Description of Work:
  • Assisting with daily maintenance of facilities and grounds
  • Janitorial duties 
  • Occasionally running errands on behalf of the Zoo
  • Trash pick up and hauling
  • Working primarily out-of-doors
  • Groundskeeping
  • Interacting with Zoo visitors in an informal setting
  • Working with a dynamic team in a fast-paced environment
  • Must have a minimum of 2 years experience in a maintenance and/or grounds keeping field position
  • Applicants must have and maintain a clean driving record
  • Possess basic skills including safely climbing ladders and operating common power tools such as table saw, circular saws, lawn equipment, etc.
  • Able to lift 50 pounds, work outdoors and demonstrate excellent time management

Summer Zoo Camp Instructor (Seasonal)


A Fun and Educational Work Experience!


Austin Zoo Education Department seeks enthusiastic and self-motivated individuals to facilitate summer camp programs.  The successful candidates will work with a team of instructors to provide an entertaining, safe, and engaging environment for Zoo Camp participants.  Teams will be responsible for groups of up to 16 campers and facilitate predetermined curricula.  Camps are weeklong action packed programs created for ages 5-6, 7-9 and 10-12.  Zoo Camp Instructors lead campers in activities, animal encounters, biofacts exploration, games, crafts and zoo tours designed to teach environmental education concepts, connect children with nature, and inspire conservation actions.

Expected Hours of Work:


This is a seasonal position  Hours may vary between 32 and 40 hours per week.  Will require flexibility in work schedule with early morning, evening, and daytime shift possibilities to fulfill Zoo Camp program needs.  There may be additional hours available starting in April with several of the Zoo’s other youth programs.


Qualities expected in a Summer Zoo Camp Instructor:

  • A passion for education and learning
  • A sense of humor and commitment to fun.  The ability to get silly with campers is wonderful.
  • Previous experience working with children.  Experience in formal or informal education preferred.
  • A background in natural science through either schooling or life experiences.
  • Excellent communication skills with staff, Zoo visitors, parents and campers.
  • Dedication to the safety and wellbeing of all campers.
  • Willingness to learn to handle and ensure the safety of a wide variety of vertebrates and invertebrates including small mammals, reptiles, amphibians, and arthropods.
  • Sufficient mobility and physical stamina to spend long periods of time conducting programs
  • Ability to tolerate weather extremes (may work inside and outside)
  • A commitment to work at least the 9 weeks of summer camp and to attend a 2 day summer camp training. June 3rd – August 9th with the week of July 4th available for vacation.

Basic requirements for all Education Seasonal positions include:
A High school diploma/G.E.D. is required. A Bachelor’s degree or Major course work from an accredited college/university in Education or a related field (Museum Studies, Environmental Studies, Parks and Recreation, Recreational Therapy, Biology) is preferred.
Successful completion of pre-employment drug testing and criminal history checks is a condition of employment.
