Summer Camp Counselors

Austin Zoo is currently recruiting three Summer Camp Counselors for the 2024 summer season. The Summer Camp Counselor is a seasonal employee responsible for leading campers, ages 6-12, in inquiry-based learning activities, crafts, games, and zoo tours.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Enthusiastically engage campers in inquiry-based activities, crafts, and zoo tours
  • Ensure the safety of all campers by enforcing zoo camp rules
  • Demonstrate & encourage respect of zoo animals
  • Maintain zoo camp behavioral expectations with campers to ensure a fun, safe and inclusive environment for campers of all abilities
  • Build and maintain a good rapport with campers and parents
  • Assist with daily clean-up and continual organization of zoo camp classroom and supplies
  • Please note that this role does not include animal handling or care
  • Other duties as assigned

CRITERIA:

Experience and Education: A minimum of one year of experience working with children. Completion or pursuit of a Bachelor’s Degree in Education, Biology, Zoology, or related field from an accredited college or university.  Previous summer camp experience strongly desired.

Skills and Aptitudes

  • Demonstrate a passion for conservation and environmental education.
  • Enjoy working with children ages 6-12 of all abilities
  • Ability to make quick, responsible decisions and improvise when needed
  • Display a high level of patience and respond well under pressure
  • Comfortable speaking in front of large groups of people
  • Enthusiastic, creative, adaptable, patient, and able to work both independently and with a team
  • Able to communicate thoroughly, respectfully, and clearly with campers, parents, and other staff

Additional Requirements

  • At least 18 years old
  • Ability to work outdoors under various weather conditions
  • Successful completion of a background check

Working Schedule and Compensation

  • Mandatory Training Dates: May 27h – May 31st 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM
  • Work Schedule: Mondays – Fridays from 8:30am– 4:30pm, June 3rd  – August 9th
  • $15/hour

Guest Relations Associate (Customer Service/Sales)

If you are an animal lover AND a people lover, join our dynamic Guest Relations team at Austin Zoo! We are seeking to hire outgoing, reliable, hard-working individuals to work in our customer service and retail roles as part of our Guest Relations team, which covers Admissions, Gift Shop, and our Animal Feeding Area. We are a non-smoking workplace.

Full-time or part-time positions. Hours are generally 9 am – 5 pm, but shift slightly each season to accommodate public hours. Weekdays and weekends available, but must be able to work on Saturdays or Sundays (or both if you seek part-time hours only).

Full-Time or Part-Time Groundskeeper & Facilities Caretaker

If you love animals and would enjoy working in a unique outdoor setting surrounded (safely) by wild and exotic rescued animals, then come work for us! Austin Zoo is seeking an experienced individual for on-site groundskeeping, general maintenance, and clean-up responsibilities. Must have the ability to perform physical labor in all types of weather and be able to lift a minimum of 50 lbs.

Duties may include, but are not limited to: trimming/weeding, raking, light tree trimming, potting and planting, watering, pruning, other light general grounds maintenance, painting and minor facility repairs, transporting hay to animal care areas, trash pick-up, some facility cleaning and re-stocking including restrooms.

Duties may include, but are not limited to: habitat construction and repair, metal and carpentry work, facilities and building maintenance and cleaning, transport of animal care supplies, painting, etc.

Part-Time Educator Position

Austin Zoo is currently seeking a part-time Zoo Educator. Educators are responsible for leading field trip programs, outreach programs, scout workshops, and homeschool programs. This role also involves facilitating Capybara and Galapagos tortoise encounters with the public. Additionally, the educator will engage guests on zoo grounds through exhibit interpretation, biofacts, and animal encounters.

Temporary Seasonal Parking Staff

If you are looking to not only support our animals, but also need a temporary job for Spring Break, we have the opportunity for you! The primary responsibility of this job is to properly manage the Zoo’s parking areas to facilitate guests’ parking via directing traffic, pointing guests to our admission trailer, etc. It is recommended that applicants be able to stand for long periods of time in a variety of weather conditions, and communicate with guests in a professional, friendly manner.

The position will be available from March 9th-17th with hours from 8:30am to 4:30pm and pay at $17.50 per hour. Preference will be given to applicants who are able to work the entire nine days of Spring Break.

We are located in the Austin Zoo Train Depot at 10808 Rawhide Trail. Our ideal candidate is attentive, punctual, reliable and engaged.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Driving the Austin Zoo Train
  • Ringing train tickets and concessions
  • Filling concessions as needed
  • Maintaining a clean train depot area
QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Must be 18 years of age or older
  • Must be able to get on and off the train repetitively, and with ease
  • Must be well groomed
  • Must be able to stand for at least 6 hours
