Administrative Assistant 

Under the general supervision of the Zoo Director, this position provides support and customer service both internally and externally. To excel within this position, one must be well versed in many avenues as well as possess a consistent and positive, will do attitude. The ideal candidate for this position exudes genuinely excellent customer and coworker appreciation and is not afraid to try new things as well as clearly communicate for help when needed. This candidate must be a self-starter, able to work within a dynamic team in a fast-paced and highly rewarding environment.
  • Provides outstanding and genuine internal and external customer service
  • Assists all guests and coworkers alike in a friendly and positive manner
  • Provides information and orientation to visitors and new staff concerning the Zoo mission, rules and upcoming events and fundraisers
  • Assists in answering questions from vendors concerning general and specific knowledge of procedures, locations and facility information
  • Collects donations, admissions and other payments from patrons
  • Records daily data regarding unusual phone calls and guest questions to assist in development of training
  • Assists in maintaining consistently accurate accounting practices with accounts payables and receivables
  • Daily correspondence with staff, vendors, patrons and supporters
  • Oversees invoicing for accounts receivables
  • Oversees administration filing including accounts receivables, payables and other operational documents
  • Continually provides support to upper management to improve Zoo efficiency by streamlining policies and procedures
  • Contributes to keeping Gift Shop, Administration and other general public areas of Zoo neat and tidy
  • Routinely assists with daily duties including phone calls, filing, and donor appreciation and data entry
  • Provides support for events, fundraisers, birthday parties and private rentals as needed
  • Performs duties in a service-oriented manner and treats all staff members with respect and dignity
  • Assists in scheduling appointments for all management
  • Recognizes the needs of the staff, donors, patrons and supporters
  • Maintains excellent knowledge of Zoo emergency procedures and policies
  • Other duties as assigned by management
  • Possess a minimum of an Associate’s Degree
  • No less than five years of paid experience in clerical or secretarial roles
  • Possess a current Texas Driver’s License and a clean driving record
  • Must be QuickBooks proficient
  • Skilled in Microsoft Office
  • Must possess a genuine love of post it notes, stationery and pens
  • Ability to communicate in a positive manner at all times
  • Excellent time management skills
  • Ability to foster a positive team based atmosphere and lead by example
  • Must be able to lift, push and pull 50 pounds repeatedly
  • Ability to multi-task under all circumstances in a professional manner
  • Excellent telephone skills

Full Time Facilities Assistant/Groundskeeper

Austin Zoo is currently hiring for a full-time Facilities Assistant and Groundskeeper. This position covers a wide variety of tasks and will occasionally include working weekends, holidays and evening hours.
Description of Work:
  • Assisting with daily maintenance of facilities and grounds
  • Janitorial duties 
  • Occasionally running errands on behalf of the Zoo
  • Trash pick up and hauling
  • Working primarily out-of-doors
  • Groundskeeping
  • Interacting with Zoo visitors in an informal setting
  • Working with a dynamic team in a fast-paced environment
  • Must have a minimum of 2 years experience in a maintenance and/or grounds keeping field position
  • Applicants must have and maintain a clean driving record
  • Possess basic skills including safely climbing ladders and operating common power tools such as table saw, circular saws, lawn equipment, etc.
  • Able to lift 50 pounds, work outdoors and demonstrate excellent time management
