RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Ability to provide excellent customer service while working in a fast-paced environment
  • proper cash handling, including greeting and servicing customers at the register, taking orders and accepting payments, handling cash, debit and credit cards
  • Replenish foods at service station
  • Prepare food such as popcorn, hotdogs and nachos, etc.
  • Stock and restock items as necessary
  • Scrub and polish counters, wash dishes and clean steam tables and all other equipment

RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Driving the Austin Zoo Train
  • Ringing train tickets and concessions
  • Filling concessions as needed
  • Maintaining a clean train depot area
QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Must be 18 years of age or older
  • Must be able to get on and off the train repetitively, and with ease

  • Must be able to stand for at least 6 hours

Keeper I (Full time Non-Exempt)

The position requires a dedicated individual who will take direction from the Curator and/or Director in carrying out daily animal husbandry, exhibit and holding area management and keeper chats/encounters as scheduled. Keeper I will be trained through all areas of the zoo except Primates and Large Cats. Candidate would be eligible to train through Primates and Large Cats once they reach Keeper II status. Starting pay will be based on years of experience.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • All aspects of Animal Husbandry including but not limited to cleaning, feeding, medicating, enrichment, training, handling/restraint, etc.
  • Keeper chats/encounters as scheduled. Public media as requested by Curator/Director.
  • Maintains records pertaining to feeding, water quality analysis, behavioral observations, training activities, medical procedures, etc.
  • Cooperates with Animal Health staff for animal health issues, treatments, veterinary procedures, transfers and crating.
  • Reports facility needs to Curator/Director in a timely way.
  • Adherence to area specific standard operating procedures (SOP’s) including safety.
  • Must be able to maintain discretion with confidential information.
  • Good knowledge of species-specific enrichment and training protocols.
  • Other duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Bachelor’s Degree in biology or a related field is required with specific knowledge of animal husbandry and behavioral conditioning.
  • 1 -3 years of paid experience working with exotic animals.
  • A valid driver’s license with a good driving record.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule which will include weekends and/or evenings and holidays.
  • Ability to respond to emergencies on an on-call basis.
  • Knowledge of Word Processing and Spreadsheet software.
  • Must have good written and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to perform all husbandry tasks for all species within the facility.
PHYSICAL AND MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS:
  • In good health and capable of performing strenuous and/or heavy physical labor.
  • No history of allergy related to animals or plants, which might interfere with ability to work.
  • Ability to remain on feet for long periods of time, climb stairs, bend and stoop.
  • Ability to work in all weather conditions.
  • No impairment of sight, smell, hearing, touch, balance and agility of movement which might interfere with ability to work.
  • Physical strength, including the ability to lift up to 50 pounds and be able to move up to 100lbs.
  • Immuno-competence (possible exposure to zoonotic infections/disease).
  • Proof of negative TB screening prior to placement and annually thereafter required.
  • Proof of rabies vaccination preferred

Part-Time Education

Austin Zoo is currently seeking a part-time Zoo Educator. Educators are responsible for leading field trip programs, outreach programs, scout workshops, and homeschool programs. This role also involves facilitating capybara and Galapagos tortoise encounters with the public. Additionally, the educator will engage guests on zoo grounds through exhibit interpretation, biofacts, and animal encounters.

This position involves regular animal care duties and the handling of a variety of small animals.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Enthusiastically engage visitors in inquiry-based learning activities
  • Engage zoo guests in strategically framed discussions regarding conservation and animal welfare.
  • Demonstrate and encourage respect of animals during education programs and animal encounters
  • Assist with daily animal care duties to maintain clean, healthy and enriching animal ambassador habitats
  • Assist with program development
  • Other duties as assigned
CRITERIA:

Experience and Education:

Completion or pursuit of a Bachelor’s Degree in Biology, Zoology, Environmental Science, Education, or related field from an accredited college or university. Previous professional animal care experience (privately-owned pets not included) is strongly desired. Previous youth program experience strongly desired.

Skills and Aptitudes:

  • Demonstrate a strong interest and/or experience in environmental education
  • Enjoy working with children of all ages and abilities.
  • Ability to adapt and make quick, responsible decisions and improvise when needed
  • Display a high level of patience and respond well under pressure
  • Comfortable speaking in front of large groups of people
  • Enthusiastic, creative, adaptable, patient, and able to work both independently and with a team

Additional Requirements:

WORK SCHEDULE AND COMPENSATION:
  • $15.00 an hour
  • 8:30 AM to 4:30 PM
  • Looking for someone to work Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays.

GUEST RELATIONS ASSOCIATE

We are seeking to hire outgoing, reliable, hard-working individuals to work in our customer service and retail roles as part of our Guest Relations team, which covers Admissions, Gift Shop, and our Animal Feeding Area. Full time or part-time position. Flexible shifts on weekdays and weekends available.

Position Requirements (requires at least one year of experience):

  • Providing outstanding customer service in a busy, hill country zoo environment.
  • Operating a credit card terminal
  • Handling cash and merchandise
  • Operating a desktop computer
  • Providing visitors with information and assistance
  • Greeting all visitors upon entering and exiting the zoo

Austin Zoo is currently hiring for a full-time Custodian. This position covers a wide variety of tasks and will occasionally include working weekends, holidays and evening hours. We are a non-smoking workplace.
Description of Work:
