Austin Zoo Part-Time Educator

Austin Zoo is currently recruiting for one part-time Zoo Educator to work Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays. Educators are responsible for leading field trip programs, outreach programs, Boy and Girl Scout workshops, and homeschool programs. Additionally, the educator will engage guests on zoo grounds through exhibit interpretation, biofacts, and animal encounters.

This position involves regular animal care duties and handling of a variety of small animals.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Demonstrate and encourage respect of animals during education programs and animal encounters
  • Enthusiastically engage visitors in inquiry-based learning activities
  • Engage zoo guests in strategically framed discussions regarding conservation and animal welfare.
  • Assist with daily animal care duties to maintain clean, healthy and enriching animal ambassador habitats
  • Assist with program development
  • Other duties as assigned

CRITERIA:

Experience and Education:

Completion or pursuit of a Bachelor’s Degree in Biology, Zoology, Environmental Science, or related field from an accredited college or university; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Previous animal care experience strongly desired. Previous youth program experience strongly desired.

Skills and Aptitudes:

  • Demonstrate a strong interest and/or experience in environmental education
  • Enjoy working with children of all ages and abilities.
  • Ability to adapt and make quick, responsible decisions and improvise when needed
  • Display a high level of patience and respond well under pressure
  • Comfortable speaking in front of large groups of people
  • Enthusiastic, creative, adaptable, patient, and able to work both independently and with a team

Additional Requirements:

  • At least 18 years old
  • Ability to work outdoors under various weather conditions
  • Successful completion of a background check

WORK SCHEDULE AND COMPENSATION:

  • $13.00 an hour

Gift Shop Associate

Austin Zoo is seeking to hire an outgoing, energetic, hard working individual to work in our Gift Shop as a cashier. We are a non-smoking workplace.

Full Time positions available.

Position Requirements (requires at least one year of experience):

  • Provide world class guest relations in a busy, vibrant environment.
  • Operating credit card terminal
  • Handling cash
  • Providing visitors with information and assistance
  • Greeting all visitors upon entering the zoo
  • Retail experience preferred
  • Position includes indoor and outdoor work in all types of weather conditions

Individuals must meet the following requirements:

  • 18 years of age or older
  • Able to lift 50 pounds
  • Possess a valid Texas driver’s license

Custodian

Austin Zoo is currently hiring for a full-time Custodian. This position covers a wide variety of tasks and will occasionally include working weekends, holidays and evening hours. We are a non-smoking workplace.
Description of Work:
  • Sanitizing frequently touched surfaces
  • Assisting with daily maintenance of facilities and grounds
  • Janitorial duties
  • Occasionally running errands on behalf of the Zoo
  • Trash pick up and hauling
  • Working primarily out-of-doors
  • Groundskeeping
  • Interacting with Zoo visitors in an informal setting
  • Working with a dynamic team in a fast-paced environment
Qualifications:
  • Must have a minimum of 2 years experience in a maintenance and/or grounds keeping field position
  • Applicants must have and maintain a clean driving record
  • Able to lift 50 pounds, work outdoors and demonstrate excellent time management
